Life Sciences IP Associate | Top 30 International Law Firm | City of London

The Firm

Ranked in theTop 30 of law firms in the UK and as one of the world's leading international law firms, this firm employs over 1000 lawyers across the globe and is considered one of the most prestigious firms outside of the magic circle.

There's a variety of sectors in which they operate, but they are heavily ingrained in tech, media and communications, private wealth, real estate, infrastructure and energy, and, of course, in life sciences.

Those are their main sectors. They also operate in other sectors, including but not limited to aerospace and defence, chemicals, logistics, and manufacturing.

As one of the big tech firms, you will never be far away from the vast, growing tech empires within the legal sphere, and now they are looking to expand their patents team and are looking to hire a new Life Sciences IP Associate or Senior Associate.

The Role

This is a fantastic position for a Life Sciences IP Associate or Senior Associate with 2-6 years of PQE to join a leading Top 30 international practice in the City of London.

Life sciences is a key commercial sector focus for the firm, alongside technology.

The firm has a substantial team of around 90 lawyers in its life sciences sector group.

The team works with ambitious, innovative clients to build their businesses globally across pharma, biotechnology, medical devices, and digital health.

The wider IP/IT group is one of the most highly respected units out there.

Key responsibilities in this post will include drafting and reviewing, and advising on a wide range of complex IP agreements, biopharmaceutical partnering arrangements, and other commercial contracts in the life sciences and healthcare sectors.

The client base spans those in the pharmaceutical, biotech (including AIDD, techbio, synbio, and industrial biotech), medical devices, diagnostics, digital health, and healthcare sectors, including multinational companies and investors and the most innovative venture-backed early-stage high-growth companies.

The work will expose you to the cutting edge of technology commercialisation, and you will have a real and direct impact on client's growth and on patient outcomes by supporting them to bring to market new therapies, platforms, and other products based on each new wave of technology.

You will be given as much client contact as you can handle, with some of the world's brightest-founder entrepreneurs and most insightful investors.

The majority of your work will be life-science and healthcare-related, but there will also be opportunities in the deeptech sector (e.g., semiconductors, fusion and other energy generation technology, battery technology, graphene and other novel materials, robotics, quantum computing, cryptography, large-language model development, etc.) and in neighbouring fields such as the cleantech, defence tech, and space tech sectors.

Requirements

  • You will need to be a solicitor qualified in England and Wales.
    • with 2-6 PQE and relevant legal experience gained from a top-tier UK or international practice.
    • Prior experience in a well-regarded life sciences team, advising a range of clients within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and/or medtech industries;
    • Strong IP background with transactional and commercial deal experience, including the ability to advise on complex licensing deals and commercial arrangements; and
    • Prior experience of advising, drafting, and reviewing contracts and agreements
  • Excellent academics
    • A STEM undergraduate degree in a technical area is helpful but not required.
  • You will have good organisational skills.
  • You will have enthusiasm for intellectually challenging work.

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary and excellent benefits with clear and structured progression paths.
