Lawyer Turned Politician

5 minutes

⚖️ Is your career in law the start of a journey into politics?

As Keir Starmer enters No. 10 as Britain's new Prime Minister, it's a reminder that plenty of politicians started out their careers in law. Barack Obama, Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela were lawyers who made significant contributions on the political stage.

But do we need more lawyers in politics? We think so, yes!

While not every politician needs, or should be a politician, having politicians who understand how lawyers are written, interpreted and implemented is invaluable. Many lawyers possess an innate sense of justice and can often understand both sides of an argument, making them strong advocates for their constituents.

So, applying critical skills such as analytical thinking, persuasive communication, and a grounding in legislative processes makes a move into politics a natural progression for many legal professionals.

If a shift into politics is appealing, you could start by expanding your network, seeking new roles that delve into the nitty gritty of policy and build your personal profile.
