Automated Case Predictions

How far away are we from AI accurately predicting the outcome of cases? 🤖⚖️

Lex Machina and ROSS Intelligence both use AI to spot case trends, patterns and even how judges have ruled in the past. This means AI may be useful in predicting the outcome of cases. Predict.law certainly thinks so. They’re a new AI start-up from Seattle who are beta testing their AI model to see how well it can predict contingency-based civil case outcomes.

“A predictive tool allows attorneys in these cases to both better select cases and more confidently negotiate cases on behalf of their clients,” Predict.law co-founder and CEO Pat Wilburn.

This also opens up the possibility in America of using AI to “judge shop”–the ethically dubious but legal practice of selecting judges more likely to be sympathetic to your case. Here in the UK, we’ve already seen a rapid growth in AI-driven legal tech, with chatbots and automating routine compliance tasks both increasingly common.

But AI being able to more accurately predict case outcomes compared to expert lawyers is newer territory and very useful information for clients.
