Responding to Rejection

5 minutes

📄 “Thank you for your time but we decided to go with someone else.”

Words no-one wants to receive after a law firm interview. It’s especially tough if you’ve gone for a legal position and endured two or three rounds of interviews. In that scenario, you were a lot closer to an offer and rejection can feel personal.

Although you’d probably like to forget the experience as quickly as possible, there are positives that can come from it. Here’s how to get them and improve your chances next time:

  1. Reply to the rejection thanking them for their time.

It’s good to leave on a positive note, and if a future position comes up with the firm, you’re more likely to land a position.

  1. Ask for feedback

If you don’t know why you didn’t get the job, it’s hard to move on and make improvements for the next interview. Feedback can help you understand whether there was more you could have done.

  1. Practise your interview technique

Use your interview experience to write out the questions they asked and practice answering these and similar ones with friends, peers or family. Ensure you come across confident and your answers are clear.

  1. Get back out there

Don’t waste time, start applying for jobs again. A better job offer, a firm more suited to you and a bigger salary could all be just around the corner. This rejection may lead you to your dream role.
